| Birchwood Tourist Park 01929 554763 |
August 2005 | 8/10 | Located in North Trigon, Dorset. Family campsite so can get a bit hectic in peak season. Great base for Poole, Swanage or many Dorset locations. |
| Bodwrog 01758 740341 Llanbedrog, Pwllheli, Gwynedd, UK LL53 7RE |
May 2004 | 5/10 | Located on the Lleyn Peninsula. Showers are 50p and be quick! It is listed as a family campsite, so it should be quiet, you must be joking. Many with RIBs and other trailers who stay up until all hours and shout to their kids. No rules for placing tents so do not be surprised to find a kids cricket pitch outside your tent when you get back. Local pub (The Ship) is walking distance away - recommend the food but places are limited. Be great if families knew how to behave like kayakers do. |
| Bracelands Christchurch Caravan & Camping Site, Bracelands Drive, Christchurch, Coleford, Gloucester, GL16 7NN 01594 833376 in season 0131 314 6505 out of season |
May 2006 | 8/10 | Located in the Forest of Dean. Symonds Yat is about 15 minutes drive away. There are actually three fields in the area. Bracelands is the largest and allows tents, caravans, cars and everything else. This one allows tents and caravans and has good shower facilities. Do not camp too close to the trees, or at the bottom of the hill. When it rains it really rains. There is a shop on site but it is a little expensive. They DO have a BIG tumble dryer for the soggy gear. |
| Broad Haven Holiday Park Broad Haven, Haverfordwest, Pembrokshire, SA62 3JD 01437 781277 fax 01437 781088 |
May 2003 | 4/10 | Sadly no longer do tents, just caravans! Was 7/10 before that. Due west from Haverfordwest. Just a few minutes from the beach. Reasonably central to much that Pembrokeshire has to offer. The showers were free. The fields for camping are reasonably flat. Can get a few midges in the summer so take a good screen or bug-repellent. |
| Chine Farm Camping Site 01983 740228 Chine Farm, Military Road, Atherfield Bay, Nr Chale, IOW. PO38 2JH |
June 2001 | 5/10 | Located at Shepards Chine. Since a landslide Jan 2001 this site is no longer easily suitable for paddling round the Island. Still a nice location but you do need a car. Showers 20p |
| Grange Farm 01983 740296 Brightstone Bay IOW PO30 4DA |
August 2005 | 7/10 | If you are paddling round the Isle of Wight this is an excellent stop point. Located almost halfway between The Needles and St. Catherine's Point (Brightstone Bay). It is possible to leave the kayaks close to the water, but make sure they are clear of the path!!!! Showers are free!!!!! |
| Heathfield Farm Camping 01983 756756 Heathfield Farm, Freshwater, IOW. PO40 9SH |
June 2001 | 6/10 | Not close to water, but sea view of Hurst Castle Race. No laundry or shop facilities but most others are available. Showers are free!!!!! Netguides has a link http://www.netguides.co.uk/wight/heathfield.html |
| Ivylands Holiday Park | N/A | ? | Holiday Park at Totland Bay, I.o.W. |
| Newgale
Camping Site 01437 710253 Wood Farm, Newgale Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire SA62 6AR |
£14 per person per night for a bank holiday. Toilets and showers on site. It is close to Newgale Sands and suffers from poor drainage.
| Nolton Cross Caravan Park 01437 710701 Nolton Cross Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire SA62 3NP |
Pembrokeshire Area. Not stayed there yet but probably will at some point
Noongallas Campsite |
April 2004 | 2/10 | The only good thing here is that you can have a bonfire outside your tent. The showers did not work, the toilets are the smallest any of us have ever seen. The "road" is a track, do not bring a smart car here! The grass has not been cut for some time. Need a car to get anywhere. The "local" pub (1.5 miles away) does not serve food Sunday. Suggest sleep in the car on the drive up, you have been warned. The website is very deceptive. |
| Plas Menai 01248 670964 Plas Menai National Watersports Centre, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, LL55 1UE |
May 2004 | 9/10 | Located in the Menai Strait. They have rooms with en-suite facilities and the staff are friendly. A bar is there also for those dark chilly evenings. Its only problem, space can be limited if there is a course on so you may need to book well in advance or hope for a last minute cancellation. Would have stayed there Easter 2006 but was £30 per person! A Campsite down the road was a lot simpler. |
| Redlands Touring and Caravan Park 01437 781300 Hasguard Cross Nr. Little Haven Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire SA62 3SJ |
May 2005 | 4/10 | Flat camping area. Free showers, excellent facilities. Need to book all visitors in at the shop and if they wait too long they will get a fee charged to them. 5mph speed limit strictly observed, as is where you put your tent. If you are not rowdy (i.e. sensible) this is a great location for Pembrokeshire. Can seem expensive at £14 a night for a Bank Holiday weekend, but this is similar to many others in the area. Also a shop on site for those last minute items. Reduced the rating as they do not take groups at Bank Holidays weekends. Strange as they take them the rest of the year. Shame as I would use it again for private weekends also. |
| Reef
Lodge 01637 879058 27 Agar Road, Newquay, Cornwall, TR7 2EW |
June 2004 | 1/10 | Located in Newquay. If you can sleep in the car you will do better.
Arrival fee after 9pm of £5 per arriving group per hour. So if you and your
mates arrive separately 15 minutes later they WILL get charged the extra too - WE have
receipts to prove it! Minimum stay of 3 nights, you may need to share a room with
others (could be 5 or 6 in a room) and they have never heard of the YHA! Only the
largest hostelling group in the world! Breakfast is not until 9am, no alcohol in the
building. They have a patio but out of bounds after 10pm, so no star gazing with
your loved one with a Merlot. Do I really need to say more - AVOID. It is a shame as the location is inland but good but surfers are obviously very different in attitude. The website is VERY deceptive. P.S. The local surfers have called it "Colditz." We are not kidding at all. |
| Watermouth Cove 01271 862504 Watermouth Cove, Berrynarbour Nr Ilfracombe, North Devon EX34 9SJ |
April 2005 | 9/10 | Located at Watermouth Cove, North Devon. It is possible to paddle from the harbour itself or Briery Cove. The site has a clubhouse on site (and it does food!) althougth there is a pub just a short walk along the road. If you take that option get there early and take a torch for the dark road back. Reasonably flat pitches that will take two small tents in fact. Decent free showers. Can seem expensive if just one of you is using a tent but great for sharing. Recommended if you are in the area. |
